What is an AI coding agent?
An AI coding agent is a language model connected to tools that act on your computer. It lists and reads files, searches the codebase, edits real files, and runs shell commands — so it can execute what it just wrote, read the failure, and fix it. That is the whole difference from an autocomplete plugin or a chat window: an agent sees the consequence of its own change, and a suggestion engine never does.
Three levels of AI coding tool
Most confusion about agents comes from lumping these together. They differ in what the model can see and what it is allowed to do.
| Level | What it does | What it can see | Who verifies |
|---|---|---|---|
| AutocompleteClassic GitHub Copilot, IDE suggestions | Predicts the next few lines as you type. | The current file and a little surrounding context. | Suggests text. You accept, run and verify everything. |
| Chat assistantChatGPT, Claude in a browser | Answers questions and writes code in a conversation. | Only what you paste or upload. | Returns text. You move it into the project and find out whether it works. |
| Coding agentHtvag Agent, Claude Code, Cursor agent mode | Takes an outcome and works until it holds. | The whole repository, via read, grep and glob. | Edits files, runs commands, reads failures, and fixes them itself. |
The agent loop, step by step
Every capable agent runs some version of this. The quality differences between agents are mostly differences in how well each step is done, and how many times the loop is allowed to run.
Orient
Greps and reads the files that matter, checks package.json and existing patterns. Most bad agent output traces back to skipping this.
Plan
Breaks the outcome into steps it can verify individually, and states them before acting so you can stop it early if the plan is wrong.
Act
Applies precise edits to real files and runs commands in a persistent shell where cd and exported variables survive.
Observe
Reads the build output, the test results, the stack trace. This is the step a chat assistant structurally cannot do.
Repeat or stop
A failure becomes the next task. A completion gate checks for open todos and unverified edits before a turn is allowed to end.
What separates a good agent from a bad one
Whether it verifies
An agent that writes code and stops has only automated the typing. The value appears when it runs the build, sees the type error, and fixes it before you ever read the diff.
Whether it stops early
The common failure is a confident summary of work that is not finished. Htvag Agent runs a completion gate over every turn — open todos, unverified edits, or a reply that hands work back all push it to continue.
Whether it orients first
Agents that start editing before reading produce code that ignores the conventions already in the repository. Reading is cheap; a wrong pattern spread across six files is not.
Whether you can watch it
Streaming reasoning, tool calls and diffs is not a UI flourish — it is how you catch a wrong plan at step two instead of step nine.
AI coding agents — questions answered
What is an AI coding agent?
An AI coding agent is a language model connected to tools that act on your computer — listing and reading files, searching, editing them, and running shell commands. Because it can run what it wrote, it observes whether the change worked and corrects itself, rather than handing you code it has never seen executed.
How is a coding agent different from GitHub Copilot's autocomplete?
Autocomplete predicts the next few lines as you type; you stay responsible for running and verifying everything. An agent takes a described outcome, plans the steps, applies them across multiple files, runs the build and tests, and iterates on failures. The unit of work is a task, not a line.
How is a coding agent different from ChatGPT?
A chat assistant only sees what you paste in and can only give text back. It cannot open your repository, cannot apply its own suggestion, and never learns whether the suggestion compiled. An agent has tools for all three, which is why it can close the loop on a task instead of producing a draft.
What is the agent loop?
One turn of an agent is: read the request and the relevant code, plan the steps, call a tool (edit a file, run a command), read the result, and decide what to do next. That repeats until the goal is met or the agent decides it is stuck. Everything an agent can do well comes from that loop running enough times against real feedback.
Are AI coding agents safe to let loose on a codebase?
The two controls that matter are scope and reviewability. Htvag Agent is confined to the folder you open for the whole session and cannot read or write outside it, and every edit and command streams live so you can stop it. Beyond that, treat it exactly like a new colleague's pull request: read the diff, and rely on version control.
Do coding agents replace developers?
No — they change what a developer spends the day doing. The agent absorbs the mechanical middle of a task: the wiring, the boilerplate, the fifth attempt at a type error. Deciding what to build, judging whether the result is right, and owning the consequences remain human work, and the agent makes those a larger share of the day.
What can a coding agent not do well?
Anything where the goal is genuinely ambiguous, where the feedback loop is slow or absent, or where a wrong answer is expensive and hard to detect — architecture decisions with long-lived consequences, subtle concurrency bugs, or work in a codebase with no tests to run. Agents are strongest exactly where verification is cheap.

Htvag Agent's free plan is a complete agent. Reading about the loop is not the same as watching it fix your failing build.
